The SAGE encyclopedia of children and childhood studies 2020, 346

β€œDepictions of childhood as a time of happy innocence, but also an essentially vulnerable phase of life that required special protections as well as freedom from β€˜adult’ obligations, originated in capitalist countries in the Global North and were often imposed on children in the Global South.”

Our modern ideas of childhood have also been shaped by colonialism, and it is important to remember that there is no one notion of childhood that is universal.
